Write A Voicemail Greeting That Works

The first 10 seconds decide whether a caller stays. A good greeting names you, sets expectations and invites the caller to say why they called.

Callers who hear a long speech often hang up. Callers who hear a friendly sentence and a clear question stay. A good greeting has three parts: who you are, why you are not answering, and what the caller should do. For example: 'Hi, you have reached Sam's Plumbing. Sam is on a job right now. Tell me your name and what is wrong and Sam will call you back.'

Read your greeting aloud once. If you run out of breath, shorten it.

Getting Started

Setup is easy: follow the steps below. You need the Voice Mate app on your phone.

Get the app

  1. 1. Name yourself or your business

Start with who they have reached, so callers know they dialled correctly.

  2. 2. Say why you cannot pick up

A brief honest reason ('on a job', 'with a patient') is enough.

  3. 3. Ask for one thing

Ask for the name and the reason. Too many questions make callers hang up.

  4. 4. Save it in Greeting

Open Greeting in the app and paste your text. The next call uses it.
